Content rights for saved Instagram Stories

Downloading a story is easy. Knowing what you are allowed to do with it matters just as much.

The creator still owns the content

Instagram stories can include original photos, videos, music, voice, designs, captions, and brand material. Making a story public does not mean everyone can reuse it anywhere.

If you did not create the media, treat it as someone else's work.

Personal saving is different from public reuse

Saving a public story to remember a date, recipe, place, or useful note is one thing. Uploading it to another account, using it in a brand post, or editing it into a new video is another thing.

If your use changes the audience or purpose of the original story, get permission first.

Credit is good, but permission may still be needed

Giving credit is a good habit, but credit does not always replace permission. This is especially true for commercial, promotional, sensitive, or edited use.

When you are not sure, message the creator and ask.
